Which Resolution Should You Choose?

DPI decides both how sharp the JPG looks and how many megabytes it costs, and the two pull against each other. A PDF page has no pixels of its own — it stores instructions, so it can be drawn at any size. The DPI you pick is what turns those instructions into a fixed grid. Doubling it quadruples the pixel count, which is why the jump from 150 to 300 DPI is far more expensive than it looks — and why there is a ceiling past which we stop.

Pixel figures are for a standard A4 page, 8.27 × 11.69 inches. US Letter comes out slightly wider and shorter. The 600 DPI row is the honest exception: we cap every image at 4096 pixels per side, and 600 DPI passes that on any page longer than about 6.8 inches, so an A4 page renders at 350 DPI and US Letter at 372 no matter what you pick. Choose 600 DPI for something small and detailed — a receipt, a photograph, a half-page form — where the cap leaves room. Whenever a page is reduced the tool tells you the resolution it actually used, both before you convert and afterwards, rather than quietly handing you something smaller.

Keeping the JPG File Size Down

Start at the lowest DPI that reads clearly

Resolution is the biggest lever by a wide margin. A page that is legible at 150 DPI gains nothing from 300 except four times the bytes.

Convert first, then compress to a target

Download only the pages you need

Most forms want one page, not the document. Each thumbnail shows its own size in KB, so you can see which page is the expensive one.

Watch out for scanned pages

A scan is already a photograph of paper, so its texture and shadows give JPEG real detail to store. Expect those pages to be the largest in the set.

What You Lose, and What to Keep

Converting a page to JPG flattens it. Selectable text becomes pixels, links stop working, and form fields become a picture of form fields. None of that is a flaw in the conversion — it is what an image is — but it does mean the JPG is a copy for looking at, not a replacement for the document. Keep the original PDF.

JPEG also compresses by discarding detail, which shows up most around hard black-on-white edges as a faint gray halo. On a scanned page or anything with photographs you will never notice it. On a page of crisp text or a line drawing you might, and that is the case for converting the PDF to PNG instead. Frequently Asked Questions

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF is read and rendered entirely inside your browser, and no part of it is sent anywhere. That matters more for PDFs than for photos, because the PDFs people convert are usually bank statements, contracts, invoices and scanned identity documents. You can confirm it by opening your browser's network panel while you convert, or by disconnecting from the internet after this page has loaded — the tool keeps working.

What DPI should I choose?

Choose 150 DPI unless you have a reason not to. It is sharp on any screen and produces files small enough to email, and it is what most upload forms are happy with. Pick 300 DPI when the JPG will be printed or submitted to a form that specifies print resolution. Pick 72 DPI only when the file size matters more than legibility. The 600 DPI setting is for small pages with fine print, such as receipts and half-page forms, because our 4096-pixel ceiling reduces anything longer than roughly 6.8 inches to a lower resolution anyway.

How large will the JPG files be?

A single A4 page of ordinary text comes out around 150 to 400 KB at 150 DPI, and roughly 600 KB to 1.5 MB at 300 DPI. Picking 600 DPI on that page gives you 350 DPI and a file to match, because of the pixel ceiling described below. Pages with photographs or colored graphics land at the upper end of each band, and pages that are mostly white space at the lower end. Doubling the DPI quadruples the pixel count, so it roughly triples or quadruples the file size rather than doubling it.

Why does the tool sometimes render at a lower DPI than I picked?

Because that combination of page size and resolution would cross our pixel ceiling. We cap every image at 4096 pixels per side and about 16.7 million pixels in total, which is the safe limit across browsers. It is the two together that matter, not an unusual page: at 600 DPI an ordinary A4 page comes out at 350 DPI and US Letter at 372, since 600 DPI only fits on pages under about 6.8 inches long. The tool shows the resolution you will really get as soon as you open the file, renders at the highest resolution that fits rather than handing you a blank image, and names the affected pages afterwards. A lower DPI or a smaller page is what changes the result; switching browsers is not.

Can I convert only some pages?

Not yet — every page in the PDF is converted, and you then download the ones you want. Each page gets its own download link under its thumbnail, so a five-page document where you only need page three is two clicks. The Download all as ZIP button exists for the opposite case, where you want the whole set in one file with the page numbers already in the filenames.

Will the text in the JPG still be selectable or searchable?

No, and this is the one real cost of converting to any image format. A JPG is a grid of pixels, so text that was selectable in the PDF becomes part of the picture and can no longer be copied, searched or read by a screen reader. Convert to JPG when you need an image — for a slide, a web page, a form that only accepts images — and keep the original PDF whenever the text itself matters.

Does it work with password-protected PDFs?

Yes, if you know the password. The tool asks for it, and the password is used inside your browser to decrypt the file locally — it is never transmitted and never stored. If the PDF is protected against printing or copying rather than against opening, it converts without asking for anything, so check that you are allowed to redistribute what you produce.

How many pages can it handle?

There is no fixed limit, but resolution matters far more than page count. A hundred pages at 150 DPI is comfortable on a laptop; the same document at 300 DPI asks your browser for four times the memory per page and will be slower on a phone. Pages are rendered one at a time and each is released before the next begins, so a long document works — it simply takes longer.

What is the difference between converting to JPG and to PNG?

JPG compresses by discarding detail your eye is least likely to miss, which makes small files and is why it suits scanned pages and photographs. PNG keeps every pixel exactly, which makes larger files but avoids the faint halos JPEG leaves around sharp black text on white. Pick JPG when the file has to stay small, and PNG when the page is mostly text, line drawings or screenshots.
