Two Things Worth Knowing Before You Start
Most pages on this subject skip both of these, and they are the only two that change what you get out the other end.
Transparent areas turn white. A PDF page is a sheet of paper, and inside it the image is stored in a format with no transparency channel. Every see-through pixel must therefore be given a color, and white is the one that matches the page. If the transparency is the point — a logo meant to sit on a colored background — keep the PNG instead.
The PNG stops being lossless. Going into the PDF it is re-encoded as JPEG. Photographs and screenshots survive this without a visible mark. A diagram full of sharp text or hairline rules can pick up faint smudging at the edges. That is a property of the format, not a bug, and no browser-based tool avoids it without producing far larger files.

When PNG to PDF Is the Right Move
- A form that only takes PDF — plenty of application portals reject image uploads outright, even when the content is a scan.
- Several screenshots as one attachment — one PDF is easier to send and read in order than six loose files.
- Printing — a PDF fixes the page size, so what comes out of the printer is not at the mercy of whichever app opened the image.
- Sending something that should not be edited casually — a PDF signals "finished document" in a way a PNG does not.
If what you actually need is a smaller image rather than a document, the resize by file size tool is the better route, and it keeps PNG as PNG. For an iPhone photo, start with HEIC to JPG — though the PDF tool now takes HEIC directly too.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens to transparent areas of a PNG in the PDF?
They become white. A PDF page represents paper, and the image is stored inside it as JPEG, which has no transparency channel at all. So any transparent pixel has to be given a color, and white is chosen to match the page around it. If you need the transparency itself preserved, keep the PNG — a PDF cannot carry it this way.
Is a PNG still lossless once it is inside the PDF?
No, and it is worth being straight about that. The image is re-encoded as JPEG when it goes into the PDF, so a PNG loses its lossless property. For photographs and screenshots the difference is not visible at normal viewing size. For a diagram with sharp text or thin lines, you may see faint smudging around the edges — that is JPEG doing what JPEG does, not a fault in the file.
Can I put several PNGs into one PDF?
Yes. Select as many as you like and each becomes one page, in the order shown. You can drag the thumbnails to reorder them before converting, and remove any you picked by mistake.
What page size does the PDF use?
A4 or US Letter, or "fit to image" if you would rather the page match your image rather than a paper size — with the margin set to None that gives no border at all. A4 is 210 by 297 mm, which is 595.28 by 841.89 points in the PDF. Letter is 8.5 by 11 inches, or 612 by 792 points. Orientation can follow each image automatically, or be forced to portrait or landscape.
Do my images get uploaded anywhere?
No. The PDF is written by JavaScript running in your own browser, so the images never leave your device. There is no server to upload to, which is also why it works with no account and no limit on how many files you convert.
Why is my PDF smaller than the PNG files I put in?
Because PNG stores images losslessly and the PDF stores them as JPEG. JPEG throws away detail your eye is poor at noticing, which usually makes it much smaller than the equivalent PNG. A set of three PNGs totalling 27 KB in our own test came out as a 13 KB PDF. Screenshots and flat graphics shrink the most; detailed photographs shrink least.
Can I convert a PDF back into PNG files?
Yes. That is the exact reverse of this tool, and it now has a page of its own: our PDF to PNG converter renders each page of an existing PDF to a lossless PNG in your browser.
